I talked with someone this week who should be thriving. Talented. Sharp. Hungry to lead. But completely demoralized.
Why? Because their leader has them so locked into task execution that they canโt see daylight, let alone opportunity.
Theyโre not asking to drop responsibilities. Theyโre asking to ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ. A project. A process improvement. A team initiative. Anything that signals: ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐โ๐บ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป ๐ถ๐.
Instead, theyโre getting โstick to your laneโ energy wrapped in โfocus on your current roleโ language.
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ต ๐๐ฎ๐๐
Leadership can sharpen people โ give confidence, visibility, stretch assignments.
Or it can cut them down. Make them small. Convince them their ceiling is someone elseโs floor.
And most leaders swinging that second edge donโt even realize it.
โLead, follow, or get out of the wayโ
If youโre leading, actually lead. Developing people is part of the job. If youโre not preparing someone to do your job (or something bigger), youโre managing โ not leading.
And thatโs fine. But letโs call it what it is.
Hereโs the uncomfortable part: Are you holding people in place because the work needs them thereโฆ or because you do?
Thereโs a difference between โwe need your focus because of X timelineโ and โstay in this box because I donโt know how to function without you in it.โ

They need stretch assignments. Rooms where decisions are made. Permission to fail forward. Someone to say ๐ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ธ ๐๐ผ๐โ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ before they think they are.
They donโt need another workflow tutorial.
Your job isnโt to keep people in lanes. Your job is to build leaders who will eventually outgrow you โ and to celebrate when they do.
If youโre not doing that, what are you doing in leadership?
