I talked with someone this week who should be thriving. Talented. Sharp. Hungry to lead. But completely demoralized.


Why? Because their leader has them so locked into task execution that they canโ€™t see daylight, let alone opportunity.


Theyโ€™re not asking to drop responsibilities. Theyโ€™re asking to ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ. A project. A process improvement. A team initiative. Anything that signals: ๐—œ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—œโ€™๐—บ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐˜.


Instead, theyโ€™re getting โ€œstick to your laneโ€ energy wrapped in โ€œfocus on your current roleโ€ language.


๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€


Leadership can sharpen people โ€” give confidence, visibility, stretch assignments.


Or it can cut them down. Make them small. Convince them their ceiling is someone elseโ€™s floor.


And most leaders swinging that second edge donโ€™t even realize it.


โ€œLead, follow, or get out of the wayโ€


If youโ€™re leading, actually lead. Developing people is part of the job. If youโ€™re not preparing someone to do your job (or something bigger), youโ€™re managing โ€” not leading.


And thatโ€™s fine. But letโ€™s call it what it is.


Hereโ€™s the uncomfortable part: Are you holding people in place because the work needs them thereโ€ฆ or because you do?


Thereโ€™s a difference between โ€œwe need your focus because of X timelineโ€ and โ€œstay in this box because I donโ€™t know how to function without you in it.โ€


๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ


They need stretch assignments. Rooms where decisions are made. Permission to fail forward. Someone to say ๐—œ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚โ€™๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜† before they think they are.


They donโ€™t need another workflow tutorial.


Your job isnโ€™t to keep people in lanes. Your job is to build leaders who will eventually outgrow you โ€” and to celebrate when they do.


If youโ€™re not doing that, what are you doing in leadership?

Who on your team is ready for more but not getting it? Whoโ€™s pulling at the reins, and you keep tightening them?


And what would happen if you finally let them run?
